I have been very busy lately working on some stuff. I did not notice that my last post was posted five days ago. No need to find clearer explanation on the sudden continuous decline of my traffic.


My April Statistics

I am giving myself a break but I don’t know how. Here are my options:

  • Doing it with spaghetti and milk again as I always did it.
  • Feeling an urge to go adventurous, maybe try the zipline near Digos or what.
  • Staying in a hotel is another option; I know many good hotels in Davao. I’ve been to many places but a Davao Hotel is really different from others. Davao Hotels are superb; from the lobby down to the bathrooms.

I’m still thinking of other options other than those stuff. A cold treat to the bathroom would be another nice option.

After the relatively short break, I’d go in busy mode again. I have to do a lot of stuff; Internet-related to my upcoming enrollment papers (amf, Microsoft Word and Mozilla Firefox is fighting over the spelling of enrollment; MS Word says it is enrolment while the latter says it is enrollment).

I’d take this break-opportunity to post and post and do a little catching-up. My goal would be to revive my dying statistics.

Since the start of the year, I’ve been doing some freelance work. So it’s just 4 months since I started doing it yet I learned a lot of things.

  1. Set clear deadlines. There are some clients that gives you the freedom to have a flexible deadline. I’ve noticed that it’s not effective. I work faster better when I know there’s a clear deadline. You can set your deadline yourself to finish it.
  2. Put an end in mind. Stick it to your mind; what will you get after finishing the job? A good way to stay motivated.
  3. Instant Messaging software can kill your time. I’m aware of this but I only started signing out my IM accounts before doing a job.
  4. The Internet is a good resource; but can kill productivity. Yep yep, whenever I work I always get tempted to surf my way to the Internet. Unplugging the cord is not effective ’cause it’s also helpful especially when things are turning not right.
  5. Take breaks. Read the (10+2)*5 method. It’s a good way to spend an hour. Ten minutes work; two minutes break — do it five times to complete an hour. It’s very effective.
  6. Flexible workhour is what I am good at. Yes, I can easily adjust to new sleeping and waking up habits. I usually start my work at 11pm; finish it out by 5am to sleep. In some rush cases, I do it from 11pm to 12nn — then sleep (zzzzzz).

I do have a lot more things to share but I still have to work on a project. See ‘ya after I finish the job.

I was playing with StumbleUpon a while ago when I saw Zymic, a company that offers free web hosting.

I signed up for an account ’cause I believe it’s worth a try. Their website’s interface is clean and professional. They don’t have a cPanel though. Uploading of files is still thru FTP or their web-based File Manager.

They offer 2,000MB (approximately 2GB) web space and 35,000 (approximately 35GB) monthly bandwidth. PHP and mySQL is supported; both of the stable latest versions. PHPMyAdmin is also available, as well as Webalizer for logging statistics. Unlike other free webhosts, they DO NOT automagically add advertisments on your header or footer. :D

Another good thing with them is that they give cash prizes to the authors of top 3 websites hosted to them. They also give out free domains for deserving websites.

For domain-owners, you can host with them. They announce their nameservers so that you can use them.

Hey guys, I got my new phone after 8 months being phoneless. It’s a part of the 3-cellphone bundle (all Nokia 6230s) offered by one of Sun Cellular’s plan packages.

It’s a Nokia 6230! It is slim and lightweight. Uber-slim that it’s thickness scores at 9.9mm; not even touching the centimeter range. It weighs 66g; far lighter than laptops! But seriously, it’s feather-light especially without the battery pack.

I tried to get the most out of it’s precharged battery juice. I played with it; from its Bluetooth connectivity down to its camera. Too bad I haven’t tried using it’s xHTML web browser; I wonder how my blog will look with my new phone?

Nokia 2630 on the box

It’s VGA camera can shoot up to 640×480 pixels for images and 128×96 pixels for video. All the images in this post were taken using the phone (the phone on the pictures is a different phone; but same phone model). The rendered images are decent; not bad and not that good.

It boasts its basic PDA functions: to-do lists, alarm clocks, currency converter, stopwatch, reminders and calendar. The phone was not too serious that it even bothered to have games!

Audiophiles, this is not for you. It’s built-in loudspeakers doesn’t sound good, just at par for a normal phone. Good thing it has a standard 35mm audio jack on its side; near the USB and charger ports.

It supports polyphonic (MIDI) and MP3 ringtones; you can load it up with your HamburJer and Janina San Miguel ringtones but beware it only has 11MB user-usable disk space! Another bad would be it’s memory is NOT expandable; a music library is a NO NO.

Weeeeeee. Okay, I am not referring to my age (16) but to the other people of my age.

Last March 19, 2008, I posted a news in this blog regarding the release of the 2008 DOST SEI Undergraduate Scholarship results. To date, I have 45 comments for the post; the most in a post I had in this blog.

I think there is something wrong with them! Some of they’re comments are pissing me off. Why?

  1. They love using shortcuts; even in the Internet. I can accept these shortcuts if it were a text message; but not for a comment most-probably made using a computer with a QWERTY keyboard! (comment #s 3, 10, 17, 20, 22, 26, 28, 30, 33, 34, 35, 37, 38, 39 and 44)
  2. They don’t follow the use proper of caps. Some of them wrote their comments in plain lower-caps while some alternated it like tHiS oNe. Amf! (comment # 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 37, 38, 39, 40, 42, 43, 44 and 45 OR all comments except 1, 2 and 41!)
  3. They don’t put a single space after a punctuation. Yes,like this one.Annoying,right? (comment # 12, 16, 19, 35, 37, 38)
  4. They ask me to send them the results thru their e-mail, mobile phones. It’s acceptable as long as they request it in a nice way. :D Another thing, I don’t even own a mobile phone to notify them.
  5. One even asked me to send his scholarship award to their doorstep. Waaaaa, I’m not DOST okay!

Now, I’m planning to recompile the results in an excel file and send it to all of them in bulk.

What’s wrong with them? I think they’re uber-influenced by text messaging! Bad!

Most of my Pisay batchmates and loyal readers of this blog know about the McDo issue; the Horrible 8-McDo experience. I have contacted McDo last March 20, 2008 regarding my complain. Mr. Bernard Rafols, the manager of Technology Services Group, told me that he will escalate the matter to their Customer Service Group, their 8MCDO team, and to the area manager handling Davao. He also told me to expect a response from them.

Last April 2, 2008; I received a letter from Ms. Elaine Esparagoza, the Restaurant Manager of McDo DaMoSa, dated March 25, 2008. In the letter, she extended her utmost gratitude for sharing my experience with them thus bringing the issue to her attention. She also apologized for the inconveniences the incident brought to us.

More importantly, she assured me that corrective actions and measures were taken to avoid similar incidents in the future after discussing our experience with their delivery service team.

I highly appreciate McDo DaMoSa’s response to my complaint. They applied the principles of kaizen, or continuous improvement. I hope that McDo DaMoSa will live up to their assurances.

Hail McDo! Just don’t let me down! :D

Hey, guys. I’m making this post after having successfully migrated my blog from the crappy slow DreamHost to the uber-cute-named A Small Orange.

Here’s it.

Requirements

  • Patience. Patience is a virtue.
  • Preferably an FTP client. An online FTP client would do.
  • Access to your mySQL server; I recommend using PHPmyAdmin in managing your database although using the console would do.
  • Basic knowledge on mySQL.

Back-Up

First of all, you have to backup your blog’s files. Access your blog’s root thru your FTP client. Copy all the files in your blog’s root to a hard disk destination of your choice.

After backing-up all the files, the next move would be backing up the entire database. Thru your SQL interface (PHPmyAdmin is again recommended), access your SQL server then your blog’s database.

If you are using PHPmyAdmin, just click the Import button at the top, then check the tick box below that says something like “Download File”. Save the imported SQL file to a hard disk destination of your choice.

But if you’re not using the nifty tool, you have to do it your own provided you have knowledge on it. You may also ask your web host to do it for you.

Copying the Data to New Host

Then, we’ll be making something senseful. Access your new SQL server (your new host’s SQL) thru PHPmyAdmin or console. If you’re using PHPmyAdmin, just click the Export button above, then upload the file you just saved on the hard disk destination of your choice to your SQL server and have it copied there by itself. Again, if you’re not using PHPmyAdmin, you may ask your new web host to do it for you.

Yey, you already have a copy of your database on your new host. Then, we’ll be copying the blog root files you saved in the hard disk destination of your choice. Using your FTP client, upload it to your new host. On some modern FTP clients, drag-and-drop would do the entire job.

CHMOD Time

Ooops. we’re not that done yet. You still have to set the chmod of the following folders and its folders and files to 777:

  • /wp-content/themes/
  • /wp-content/uploads/
  • /wp-content/plug-ins/

To change a folder’s chmod, you may use your FTP client. If you’re using FileZilla, just right-click the folder and click file attributes. Type the value ’777′ on the textbox then check Recurse in files and subdirectories then click okay.

Before I forget

I almost forgot this one. Using your favorite text editor (Notepad’s one), modify your local copy (the one on the hard disk destination of your choice) of wp-config.php.

The file looks like this:

Now, you have to change the values in bold to your new hosts’ configuration. :D

Last Step?

Uhm, the last step. You have to login to the place where you bought your domain aka domain registrar. Change your nameserver settings (steps differ from a nameserver to another) to your new host’s nameserver. It usually sounds and looks like ns1.yourhost.com, ns2.yourhost.com and in some cases ns3 to ns4.

After setting, wait for at most three days for the change in DNS info to propagate around the world. Your blog at your old host will be the one displayed when the viewer’s ISP’s DNS server hasn’t received the DNS update.

Ooops, the lastest step.

Check your blog once it propagates around the world. If you experience problems, try rechecking your wp-config.php. You may also try disabling some plugins. My PHP Speedy plugin caused me some problems in migrating. :D

Busy. Uhm, it’s quite hard to describe it as it is subjective. It may be true to me; but not to you. It could also be true to both of us. Yeah yeah, enough of this crap introduction.

So how do I define busy? Uhm, right now I’m busy. I’m writing this cause temptation is seeking for attention so here I am entertaining my entertaining temptation, writing a blog entry.

Woah, if you have reached this far then you must be really bored I bet. How do I define busy?

As I said, I’m busy right now so I think I’ll just gonna enumerate my state now.

First of all, I have 26 items on my taskbar. No its not full of instant message windows; but of development tools and nerdy tools. The nerdest of them all is MPLab IDE. It’s an IDE for programming microcontrollers. Next nerdiest item is ISIS Professional. It’s a circuit design and simulation software. Then, the rest is web developer tools such as FTP client, Macromedia Dreamweaver and the likes.

I’m half-naked. Hahaha, you may ask which half; the upper half. I’m sweating too much. Attributable to the heavy brain and physical activity. Another factor could be the wreckage of my favorite small-scale industrial fan. I attempted to turn it on but I keep on backing-out; the smoke coming from the inside is freaking me out.

Ideas spontaneously flow out of my mind. Not only ideas; my writing style, too, is affected. Waaaaaa. I love this. I love this extreme busy-ness.

For the mean time, that’s all. Our research gadget is yelling for me; asking me to finish him up. Go go go.

Last thing, I’d like to summarize my post. I’m busy when I have 26 items on my taskbar, when I’m half-naked and when ideas spontaneously flow out of my mind! Crazy Mikko. :D
