A Small Orange Rocks

Hey guys, here in this post you’ll read how I love A Small Orange. If you don’t want to read the entire post, you may skip to what happened to me today with them.

It was the rage of Dreamhost users; the time when downtimes as long as four hours FREQUENTLY happened. That time I decided to move on a new host — good thing A Small Orange do have a good and cool web design (even if it’s simple). Their design made me remembered them when I needed a new host most.

And so…

As an impulsive buyer I am now, I swiftly checked out their plans. Then picked the right plan for me — added it to my shopping cart and checked out. Voila, I was officially the latest A Small Orange account holder that time.

Here’s a review.

Features

A Small OrangeUhm, I got a $5 a month plan which featured 400MB web space and 10GB bandwidth. The per-capita cost (cost per megabyte or gigabyte bandwidth/webspace) of my plan was far more than I had in Dreamhost. I do have about 240+ GB webspace and 5TB (that’s 5,000 GB) bandwidth. But it was no big deal since I was not able to utilize all my resources in Dreamhost. The ASO plan gave me something that best suited my current traffic.

As most of the current web hosts, they support PHP — both 4 and 5. Also with MySQL 4 or 5, Ruby-on-Rails and a lot more. You may request them to add special modules for you if you need them.

Reliability

Reliability-wise, they are FAAAAAR better than Dreamhost. Although I experience downtimes, they were mostly fast — some were even just seconds while the average is 10 minutes (but the longest was two hours) as compared to Dreamhost’s at least an hour downtimes.

The Swarm

Yesterday dawn, I posted some 136 free mobile Java Games in my blog.

Now, lots of people are swarming over it.

Tomorrow, my shared server could crash or my web host would force me to upgrade to a higher plan.

People are getting crazy with my post. Most of my traffic now are from the free mobile Java Games I posted. An hour past today’s midnight, I already reached the average number of hits I get in a normal day. Amf!

Later, I’ll be revealing my secret on how I gained lots of traffic on a single post. Stay tuned and subscribe!

Google Webmasters Central, now in 26 languages

Internet’s global invasion must come with localization.

Google recently localized their Google Webmasters Central Tools to four more languages; supporting up to 26 languages to press date.

The four languages made available today are Arabic, Hebrew, Hindi and Thai.

Now, there are more reasons for webmasters to use this tool. There’s no need for non-English webmasters to suffer the pain of understanding jargon (for them) English terms.

Circulating Earthquake Warning Text Messages – a hoax according to Philvolcs

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Philvolcs) confirmed that circulating text messages regarding a magnitude 6.8 earthquake prediction to hit the Philippine Plate is a hoax.

U.S. GEOLOGICAL SOCIETY PREDICTS A 6.8 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE WILL HIT PHILIPPINE PLATE TONIGHT. PLS BE CALM & ALERT. This txt msg is from hawaii state emergency preparedness office. Please pass (no harm in being prepared) lets pray dis will not happen.

Philvolcs also clarified that they are not aware of any United States Geological Society, instead they are working with the United States Geological Service (but as far as I know its US Geological Survey). They also stressed out that there is no current technology that can accurately predict an earthquake.

iPhone; on its way to the Philippines

It’s official, iPhone is coming to town. At last, we’ll see functional non-cracked iPhones in the country.

Here’s an excerpt from Globe Corporate Blog:

Globe, SingTel, Bharti Airtel and Optus to bring iPhone to the region
Manila, 12 May 2008 – Globe, SingTel, Bharti Airtel and Optus today announced that they have signed an agreement with Apple to bring the iPhone to the Philippines, Singapore, India, and Australia later this year.

More information will be released at a later date.

Woohoo! Smart should also have an agreement with Apple; especially now that 3G iPhones are being released.

On Posting Copyrighted Material

After reading Enrico Dee of Byahilo ‘s experience (a TV station used his photos for a TV show segment without permission) and hearing a lot on fair use and copyright during the iBlog 4, I decided to read the RA 8293 or the Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines.

Enrico Dee’s follow-up post on the issue inspired me to be vigilant on these issues. It reinforced my “do not publish copyrighted materials” instinct in posting blog posts.

Just this afternoon, I read a blog post from a blog (obviously) which was written very well shall I say. I admit that I am a prejudicial person for doubting the blogger’s (behind the article) writing skills to write such an article. And so I decided to google (in lower case cause it is used as a verb) a part of the content and learned that the article posted in http://pinoyteens.net/2008/05/02/no-domestic-unrest-from-rice-problems-2/ was actually copied from an ABS-CBN news article page. The Electric Fan

For some long span of time, our house did not have an electric fan for our living room except for the small not moving (shall I say static) electric fan I use when using the computer (it recently got broken, sadly); an aircon neither.

Yesterday afternoon, the topic on electric fans broke out not because of the climate (it was drizzling that time) but when each of us was getting bitten by huge mosquitoes. The discussion’s resolution was to buy a new electric fan for our poor living room deprived of its right to have the said technological gadget. And so we swiftly took our bath and dressed on our best clothes for our quest for the new electric fan.

Our first stop in the mall was the mall’s appliance center where we inspected each and every fan. We had like four finalists who passed the first screening. We then carefully inspected the finalists’ performance and aesthetics. It took us a very long time to decide on an electric fan that we our stomachs were already growling out loud despite the fact that we ate a heavy snacks before we left for the mall. Bloggers Suck by David & Goliath

I’m supposed to catch up on some stuff I missed to do, but I preferred to take a break first. 16 days almost internetless, I deserve a break.

Last Thursday a several hours before I flew back home, I bothered to visit the David & Goliath stall at TriNoma to check out some of their Dude tee designs. There I saw what I was expecting, the Little Losers collection and the Bloggers Suck shirt I first saw during the iBlog 4 (I think it was kuya Juned who wore the shirt, not sure).

Bloggers Suck

Since I did not have the guts to buy a Little Loser shirt that time (I think I just didn’t like the available Losers), I decided to get myself a 995-peso Bloggers Suck shirt. I tried the first size I saw, and indeed it was a perfect fit for me.

While paying in their counter, the guy who was manning the counter asked me where I live (maybe ’cause I was wearing pambahay or home clothes). I told him that I live in General Santos and he answered “ah, so malapit lang pala bahay niyo” (ah, so your house is just nearby). Then I realized that a General Santos avenue near TriNoma exists so I clarified that I live in General Santos City of Mindanao. Then I asked him a series of questions regarding the arrival of the complete Little Losers collection. He was some kind of surprised since I knew a lot and was very interested on the collection. He also told me that they had a Little Losers Bloggers Party and so I told him that I was there. I can see his amazement to see a person from miles away buy a shirt from them. LOL. After the short talk I gave him a Gift Certificate which I think he was not expecting.

I’m Home, at last

Hey you guys, I’m back to General Santos!

At last; I could have a stable internet connection, my “own” (not my own, okay) computer and all the softwares I need. I felt like being deprived of my geeky routines; surf the internet, program, surf, make the documentation and a lot of stuff. Now that I’m here, I need to do a lot of catching up to the “real” world.

Custom Firmware 3.95 GEN-2 for PSP Download

The custom firmware 3.95 GEN-2 update for PSP has been released less than a week after the release of it’s parent version 3.95 GEN.

The update fixed the following items, as promised by their developers at PSPGEN:

  • Fixed issue which crashed the PSP if you had vshmenu mode ‘None’.
  • Fixed SNES emulator issues, now works fine.
  • Fixed few homebrew issues with the Slim.
  • Last version of the SNES emulator, PSPTube and many other homebrew using ME now work fine.

For everyone who wants to install 3.95 GEN, you must be on at least 3.71M33.

  • Download the package with 3.95 GEN and the popsloader.
  • Note: When installing, all your plug-ins will be disabled.
  • Connect your PSP to your computer via USB.
  • Extract the file you downloaded by right clicking and choosing the option ‘Extract Files To…’.
  • Extract the files to your PSP’s assigned letter (for example, X).
  • Leave USB Mode.
  • Goto GAME > Memory Stick > 3.95 GEN
