Computer Science vs ECE

About the same time last year was the deadline of submission of the UPCAT (University of the Philippines College Admission Test) Form 1. At an early stage of the school year, we were forced to choose for the course we’d be pursuing — at least in our case, the UP do or die.
I was left with two UP course choices in my mind. Either BS Computer Science or BS Electronics and Communications Engineering. It was confusing since I loved both fields much. If I take Computer Science, the trade-off would be the possible “engineer” on my name. But still, I chose it.
Months passed, then by early august we took the UPCAT. After the horrifying (just kidding!) exam, lots of things changed. The confusion whether to take Computer Science or ECE raged. And so, I started to ask people which course is better. Some Computer Science graduates insisted that BS Computer Science is a lot better than ECE. The latter, also, insisted that ECE was better. Of course, they’d love their own courses.
Now that I’m in U.P. taking up BS Computer Science, I find more reason not to shift to ECE. It was only on our first meeting in CS11 that I knew that their are a lots of money in the field, when we were asked why we chose Computer Science. My answer to the question why CS was simple, because I just love it.
As CS11 meetings pass week by week, I start to love Computer Science more. It’s fun and I simply love it.
Uhm, ECE? I am still interested on the field. What’s making me love ECE is the microcontrollers part. I still have lots of time anyway, lots of time to study that small programmable chips. Still lots of time to learn how to make circuits.
For now, I’ll love Computer Science. Not because I am forced to, because I want to.
My frustrations for now would be to become a marine biologist and a pilot. I know I did my part, it’s just that I’m not capable of fullfiling my dreams all in one instant. I’m not a monster. I think I should be content with my SCUBA Diving class (PE2) and flight simulator.
But someday, just like my CS11 prof, I’ll try to fullfill them all.

Postscript: Oh noes, I need not to leave the country — by choice and legal contract. I hope Google would create a giant office here in the Philippines, just like the one in Mountainview, California.
Another pahabol: I’m currently here at the EnggLib2 — chilling myself after the mind-boggling Math 17 first long exam. Amf, I was not able to answer one of the bonus questions.

There’s a lot of overlap between CS and many related fields (such as ECE), thus the confusion. A lot of the jobs could be handled by graduates of either program. My personal view is that Computer/Electrical/Software-Engineering are all specialized applications of Computer Science, and so you get much more personal freedom with CS.

Sino pa ba ang nag Computer Science sa batch natin?
it would not be well balanced to compare CS against ECE as they both run on different paths.
what matters is what you really like to pursue, and enjoying pursuing and doing all your life. taking something that is not your interests basically leads to unhappiness and unsatisfactory - a sister next to regrets. consider not the income, nor the title- believe me it does not sum up at the end.
CS is a wide array of numbers and function, its just a first step to get a more engineering specialy too, systems engineer, windows engineer, linux engineer, systems analyst, consultant, specialist, network engineer, design engineer, design architect - if the word engineer seducts you in this case.
BSCS is a very very w i d e array of specialty. any country can offer CS related job as computers and softwares are all around us.
and this applies to ECE course as well, this could be on communications, semicons, broadcasting, chips, lights and electricity, robotics, more more more, its all around us.
just consider a choice that makes your interests happy and content in the end.
