Globe Broadband: Setting up PROLiNK Hurricane 5200 with Linksys WRT54G2

Last Friday, we had our Globe Broadband connected at the apartment. Globe Telecom deployed a PROLiNK Hurricane 5200 as our ADSL modem. Since we wanted to share the Internet connection throughout the room, we bought a Linksys WRT54G2 wireless router.

Woot

Configuring the PROLiNK Hurricane 5200 to work with Linksys WRT54G2 wasn’t that easy. Here’s a rough guide on how to do it. This guide must work with other models (such as Hurricane 9200) and other brands, but the steps will differ.

DISCLAIMER: Basic networking knowledge is a prerequisite. You must also know your Globe Broadband username (with the @globelines.com.ph or @visayas.globelines.com.ph) and password. If not, call customer service at (02) 919 8888. Toll charges will not apply if using a Globelines, Globe or Touch Mobile line.
  1. Place the modem to bridge mode.
    • Connect your modem to the computer thru the Ethernet (CAT5) cable.
    • Fire up your browser and go to http://192.168.1.1/globe
    • Go to WAN Configuration under Internet Interface.
      • You will be asked for a username and password. Use this:
        Username: Admin
        Password: 3UJUh2VemEfUtesEchEC2d2e
    • At the bottom of the page is the list of existing configurations. Delete them all by clicking the trash configuration icon.
    • On the same page, create a configuration. Fill in the VPI, VCI  and Channel Mode settings with the following:
      VPI: 0, VCI:35, Channel Mode: 1483 Bridged
    • Disable DHCP Server. Under LAN Interface, go to DHCP Settings. Choose None and click Apply Changes. unnecessary according to motion55 of PinoyDSL
    • Disable routing. Go to Routing under Advance. Choose None in Default Gateway and click Apply Changes. unnecessary according to motion55 of PinoyDSL
    • Restart your MODEM. Under Admin, go to Save and Reboot. Click Commit and Reboot.
  2. Disconnect the modem to your PC. Connect your PC thru Ethernet (CAT5) cable to your wireless router. Use any port in the wireless router EXCEPT the Internet port.
  3. Configure your router.
    • Fire up your browser and go to http://192.168.1.1/. The username is blank and the password could be one of the following: admin, password, pass.
    • The default page is the basic setup page.
    • Find the local IP address field. Change it to 192.168.1.2 to avoid conflict with your modem’s I.P. address.
    • After the changes are committed, you need to go to 192.168.1.2 and login again.
    • Still under basic setup, change Automatic Configuration DHCP to PPPoE.
Automatic Configuration - DHCP to PPPoE
    • Enter your Globe Broadband username and password.
  4. Connect, connect and connect. Connect the Ethernet cable from the modem to the wireless router’s INTERNET port.
  5. Do a hard reset of  your modem and wireless router by depriving them power (unplugging) for at least 10 seconds. Power them up and enjoy!

If you run into any problems, just comment and I’ll try to answer them if I can. :D

Hi Mikko,

I already tried the configuration that you posted pero ayaw pa rin. I check the status in linksys saying walang IP address na nakukuha using PPPoE.
I cannot connect sa internet using direct LAN sa linksys din.

Make sure na naka1483 Bridged ang H5200 mo.

If it’s still not working, try asking for your VPI and VCI settings sa Globe Broadband hotline. Baka tulad sila sa PLDT MyDSL na nagdidiffer ang VPI/VCI settings based sa location.

The reason the two don’t work is because both modem and router have the same subnet. Worse both have the same IP address which is 192.168.1.1. The quickest way is to simply change the IP address of the WRT160N to 192.168.2.1.

This however will not fix the problem with utorrent. In fact, you may now have web browsing working but this setup worsens your torrent performance because of double-NATing. This is caused by cascading another router (the WRT160N) behind the first router (the H5200).

The procedure at the site you found is the best one. It is not easy to follow but it is the only way to fully utilize the expensive WRT160.

Here are the key points:

1. You don’t need to disable the DHCP server of the H5200.

MUS: 2. Change the setting from routing to bridging by selecting 1483 Bridged LLC on the H5200.

3. Transfer the PPPoE log-in username/password to the WRT160N.

4. Enable UPnP on the WRT160N.

5. Check if you are getting a proxied IP address. Check the thread discussions on transparent proxy on Globe.

Yo, if we go ahead and manipulate these default globe specific settings. Does globe post some kind of violation on the service policies and whatever it is that the subscription terms has?

A frend of mine also this type of dsl model and i recently bought her a WRT54G2 linksys router. But I couldn’t get it to work. I do have an existing subscription with PLDT MyDSL and the WRT54G2 works on it, but not on my frend’s globe subscription.

This is the only post i found here on the net that appears to be helpful. And i hope it works when i get back to configuring my frend’s router.

Mikko
August 23, 2009 at 7:53 pm

@eLru:

Actually, we are not manipulating Globe specific settings. We use the same settings, it is just that we are transferring some of them to the wireless router (such as the username and password).

I don’t think it is a violation of Terms of Services. I still call their hotline even though I’ve transferred the settings.

Mikko
August 25, 2009 at 11:51 am

@urok:
I think they are throttling the speed from their end, hindi modem setting.

OpenDNS won’t speed up your download speeds pero posibleng mapabilis niya ang pagresolve ng domain names. :D

Hi! I have a prolink H9200 modem from globe and yesterday i bought a cdr-king lp8186 wireless router but it wont worked.

I noticed my encapsulation(Protocol) in the modem is PPPoA and has a username and password from globe, then i tried connecting my cdr king router and authenticating it using PPPoE on the router but it won’t authenticate, just to find out basically these two we’re different (PPPoA and oE), which made me believe the reason the device won’t communicate. is this true? or any other advices that you could give.

We’ve tried configuring the modem to DHCP as well and provided a gateway which the tech support from globe provided but i had a pre-assumption that it won’t work, and it didn’t.

I am left to a big confusion right now. Any help will be appreciated…

# Configure your router.

* Fire up your browser and go to http://192.168.1.1/. The username is blank and the password could be one of the following: admin, password, pass.

pwede ring hindi muna galawin ang prolink modem/router nyo….all you have to do is log in to your linksys router…then change the gateway of your linksys router kasi conflict ang IP address nyo….kasi same lng ng gateway ang prolink at linksys….change nyo lng from 192.168.1.1 to any IP not staring with 192.168.x.x….dati kasi akong globelines installer and repairman dito sa cebu…..after that reboot your linksys router then turn on your prolink modem/router…….

October 15, 2009 at 2:17 pm

I can’t seem to get pass step no. 1… How to convert it to bridge mode? When the router (or the wifi) was still ok, we were able to use the blue cord from the router which is placed on one of the 1-4 ports as LAN for an old laptop with no wifi while the yellow cord which comes with the Globe Prolink Hurricane 5200 modem is inserted to the INTERNET port of the Linksys router. Was that the right pairing of the cords and the devices/equipments?

As I gather it, when you say modem it’s the YELLOW cord and ethernet is the BLUE one? Is that right?

As I’ve said we’re able to that BEFORE. Now, we simply can’t. If we have to access the internet, it’s only direct LAN. We have to connect the laptop directly to the modem Globe gave us. Meaning, only one laptop can use the internet at a time. What’s more confusing is that the connection’s (for the bridge mode) confirmed but when you open an IE, “Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage.” is all you’ll get.

So the other day, my uncle (he was the one who set up the wifi and it worked for like weeks) linked me up and this is the site he recommended for me to follow, but as I’ve said I can’t get pass step no. 1 and we even try breaking up the steps, eg. #3 first then #1.

HELP, please. Thank you.

Hi sir, i tried your instructions from above and it did not work.. careful reading of your instructions reveal that its applicable to Linksys WRT54g2.. maybe that is where my problem lies because i have a Prolink 5200 modem and a Linksys WRT54g wireless router..

my question is, will your instruction still applicable even if i have a WRT54g only?

i badly need your help.. its been 3 weeks since i first tried on to set up this wireless router. im having a hard time connecting to the internet.

when i followed your instructions in deleting and reconfiguring the set up of my Prolink modem, my internet connection got lost. Good thing i was able to reconfigure it to its previous setting and got my internet back..

hope you could help me. you are the only one in the net that seems to know what he is talking about. THanks very much.

Hello. I’ve been trying to tweak my connection to make DNS resolution faster with opendns..even changing the DNS configuration of the hurricane modem to that of opendns..cleared the cache.. checked the ipconfig /all and it’s already there but yet when visiting http://www.opendns.com/welcome the page would still tell me I’m not using opendns. Any help here? I even tried changing the values manually in ipv4 yet same thing happened.

@miggy this might be a PC issue. Try to check whether you have firewall installed there that is preventing you from accessing those websites.

Hi

this setup does not work for me, whatever router i use (linksys, buffalo, asus). The only thing that happens is the router infinitely waits for a connection. I have read somewhere that some ISPs validate the mac address but i do not know if it is applicable in my case. Any thoughts on this?

Thanks

Hi there!

Just wanted to ask if you can help me.
My dad found an extra linksys wireless router (BEFW11S4) for me to use at my flat. At first it worked well but since I tried to put a password. I cannot access the internet anymore!
Sure, I can access the http://192.168.1.1/ (and can even change password to access modem) but that’s as far as I can go.
Even when I used the modem globe supplied me with (Prolink Hurricane ) and then attached that to the linksys wireless, I still cannot connect and the connection isn’t still password protected!
I have tried hard resetting but wala pa rin. :(
I can connect though if I ONLY the Prolink.
I’d really, really appreciate if you can help me with this. =) looking forward to trying out your answer(s) =) =)

this is off topic. is there a way to change prolink’s mac address. i cant open this one site (www.globe.com.ph), other sites are fine. i already tried all the trobleshooting guide i can find in google. i tried to isolate the problem its definitely not my laptop coz i was able to connect using my smartphone as modem and its not my linksys router either coz even when i connected directly to prolink i still cant access that site. the only possible thing i can think of is that i am being blocked but since i have a dynamic isp, the only permanent address i can see is the mac. pls help!

Why not just use the Linksys as a wireless access point and leave the Globe box as is? Just connect the boxes with network cable — port to port, turn off DHCP on the Linksys, and assign it an IP that does not conflict with anything. It should work.

Hi! Some Linksys Routers define the IP address to: 192.168.0.1. For some linksys routers, there is no need to change the routers default IP address. :) But if the Router’s ip address is 192.168.1.1, then you still have to change its ip address. it still depends on the IP of the router… :)

the easiest way to resolve this try ninyo mga braders/sisters.

1. dont touch any setting sa prolink adsl modem gikan/from globe.

2. configure your router ex. linksys, tplink & etc.,set the router IP to 192.168.1.2

since yung globe adsl mo nasa 192.168.1.1, no subnetting issues will take place & disable its dhcp server to this
router.
Para ang magiging DHCP server mo yung ADSL ng globe.

3. from WAN port sa prolink, connect lng any 1-4 ports sa router na nasa number instruction #2.
4.end.

Babala: wag nyo kalimotan e disable ang Dhcp server
sa mga personal router ninu sa inst.# 2. or else walang mangyayari.

my broadband connection uses prolink hurricane 5200 router. I can’t host my PC into web server, when i enter my IP address it will be redirected to 192.168.1.1 which is the router setup page and not teh index of my website (192.168.1.2)… how can I possibly solve this problem?

Bilpax,
try updating your host file: & put
“192.168.1.2 http://www.Domain.com
in order to resolved your domain locally.

An alternative approach to have your access point work with globe modem/router is to configure your access point into bridge mode (only for those wireless router/access point with at least 2 available Ethernet ports such as D-Link DIR-300, Linksys WRT54G2, Edimax BR6204WLg even CDR King Wireless Router, actually most SOHO class Wireless Router has 4 built-in Ethernet ports).

The advantage on this kind of setup.
1) Less intrusive, no changes necessary for your globe modem
2) Double NAT’ing is not an issue (dhcp and routing should be disabled on your wireless router/ap, the router act like a normal switch box, utilizing the built-in Ethernet ports of your wireless router/ap)
3) Having DHCP disabled on your wireless router/ap, it adds a layer of security.

Of course it has some, Disadvantages.
1) Since routing is disabled on your wireless router, you need to manually specify the IP address of your Wireless Clients and make sure that it’s in the same subnet and has the IP of the globe modem/router as its default gateway(it is not an issue for Wired Computers, DHCP should work)
2) Port forwarding from your globe/modem router won’t work (for most home user this is not an issue)

If you need instructions on how to do that just post it here and i’ll be glad to post a tutorial.

Hi there,
Confuse man.
your problem is not actually not hard.
1.just don’t make any changes w/ your globe ADSL router.

2.DISABLE dhcp server in your router w/ access point,
for security reasons configure in advance your wireless access security, but you can still do it later after you’ve successfully resolved your issue.

3.From WAN port of your globe ADSL, connect the other end on any ports of your router w/ access point except on its WAN port. &
4.Done.

Note: Just don’t forget to change the IP address of your personal router.

If you have questions feel free to post it right here.

I called globe tech support to ask them how to bridge the modem but it’s like they don’t even know what that means. LOL

Thank you GOOGLE!

I bridged my prolink 5200 modem and setup my tp-link wireless N router and it worked great.

@Mike – isn’t aztech 605 an ADSL modem/router in one na? I’m not really sure but if it is, you don’t have to set up the prolink with it anymore.

thanks cheryl for giving time to answer my queries. you’re right it’s modem/router in one na however it is not legally from globe i just bought it from one of their technician (under the table transaction)at first, my connection is ok using this aztech 605 bridged to my registered modem until last week i availed their promo upgrading my speed up to 2mbps so they changed the modem and unfortunately the new group of technician that came to my house don’t know how to bridge it so now i’m experiencing connection log and everytime i will call globe broadband customer service they are having a hardtime verifying my connection ‘coz technically speaking my wireless modem/router is not registered with them. im hoping that you can help me regarding this matter and can give me a step by step procedure based on my modem ( hurricane 5200 to 605 wireless router. thanks!
