Tropical Storm Ketsana

The typhoon brought almost a month-worth of rainfall in Metro Manila for a duration of six hours – the highest recorded rainfall in the area in 42 years. It brought streets of Metro Manila underwater – mostly in waist-deep flood but it was reported to have reached up to five meters in some areas.

UP Diliman’s Chancellor Sergio Cao announced early this morning that classes in UP Diliman are suspended due to the tropical storm Isang. All offices in the campus shall maintain a skeletal force. Employees living outside the campus are excused from work.

Strong rains and winds have been conquering Metro Manila since last night. As of 5am today, no public storm signal was raised in Metro Manila.

TRIVIA: Tropical Storm Isang is internationally known as Molave, a native Filipino tree and a UP Diliman Dorm. :D

Anyway, I merged the storm track of PAGASA and Integrated Multi-Agency Tropical Cyclone Forecast and this is what I got:

mashup

PAGASA’s projections aren’t bad anyway. :D I’ve always questioned their credibility, and that’s bad of me. Here are the original maps:

Yipee! This (including today) weekend is the longest weekend of my life, it’s official!

It’s a 5-day weekend – a Saturday, a Sunday, a Ninoy Aquino Day, a Quezon City day and now a “Bagyo” day. According to my CS11 instructor Sir Eric, Chancellor Cao, chancellor of UP Diliman, suspended all classes today scheduled from 12nn onwards. The suspension was triggered by the “nagraragasang” tropical storm Karen. :D Yipee, it’s a great weekend.

Despite the very long weekend, I haven’t done much on my academic, blogging and social life. I was mostly bed-ridden playing Sid Meier’s Pirates — getting up only for dinner.

Now for the last day of my weekend assuming that tomorrow’s classes won’t be suspended anymore, I’ll be doing something that is of worth. Weeeeeee.

Living my 16 years in Southern Philippines where typhoons rarely (once in a lifetime) pass, moving to the upper half of the country was sort of different. Yesterday was my first encounter with a typhoon, typhoon Fengshen also known as Frank in the Philippines.

Sunday 1am, I was quite amazed by the strong winds. The dorm’s basement (Kalayaan Residence Hall in UP Diliman [Quezon City]) was filled with raging cold air. It was cold, really cold.

Then about 2am, it started to drizzle. Raging cold air plus light rain — I did not have an idea that it was a storm.

Then by 4am, the raging cold air and rain sustains its energy. Then, the lights went off. Still no idea that it was a typhoon. By that time, my body surrendered and fell into deep sleep.

Past 9am, I was awakened by a female resident assistant’s advisory stating that signal number 3 typhoon hit the dorm. We were advised to postpone our off-campus appointments, stock food supply and etc. It was still very dark, virtually no light on the corridors.

It was the “end of the world”.

Hours later, the electricity was restored.

Then the rain stopped.

Then, bye bye typhoon.

Then, a peaceful night with no typhoon.

Then, an announcement that classes on all levels are suspended.

Then, slept for the night.

Woke up with no typhoon.

Did not attend the classes.

The end. :D
