My little brother asked me to encode some of the stories from their book, Developing Reading Power : A Support Program to Reading 4 by Clemence U. Abadilla, and I saw a lot of errors and odd sounding context. The articles after the jump.
The King of Fruits
The durian is a unique fruit. Some people say this fruit smells like hell but tastes like heaven. That is how this king of fruit is regarded. Durian is a native of Borneo and Malaysia. It is scientifically named durio zibethenus. It adapts well to the climate and soil of Mindanao. Davao and Zamboanga are commercial markets of the fruit. Now, this edible fruit is famous worldwide.
This tropical plant grows as high as 25 metres. Its leathery leaves, shiny dark green, are 10 to 16 cms. long. Its green ovoid fruit has thick spiny covering. Inside the fruit is a creamy and delicious but unpleasant smelling pulp enclosing a big seed. Durian ice cream is now produced apart from candies, jams and jellies.
The biggest durian grower in Davao is Angel Galang. He raises the fruit in an eight-hectare plantation. At first he had only the native varieties in his orchard. Now he is growing Montong and Chanee varieties from Bangkok. But the man had already produced his own selection and calls it Galang Durian 69. His selection is disease-resistant, proliferous and has a good fruiting quality. He sells seedlings of the native and imported varieties. He shows and markets durian seedlings in the Kadayawan Festival which is done yearly in the month of August.
Errors/Odd-Sounding Context:
- In paragraph 1 sentence 4, the scientific name of Durian is not written correctly. It should be Durio zibethenus or Durio zibethenus.
- Paragraph 2 sentence 1, we spell meters as meters and not metres in the Philippines. The publisher is from the Philippines so it should be meters. I believe “metres” is used on British English if I’m not mistaken.
- Odd sounding but not sure, the name Angel Galang on paragraph 3 sounds like a name of a girl. But the context says he is a he. (This is only a possible error, it may be right).
- Odd sounding. Paragraph 3 sentence 5 – Galang Durian 69? Why number 69? Hahaha.
Find more errors on the context. Hahahaha. ;D
